Here we go. Biggest series of the year so far - though I have the feeling that nothing will really be decided here. I think a split is the most likely result, and we’ll be left to look down the road at bigger series, yet to come. That would likely be fine for Arizona: if we can leave Los Angeles with the lead, that’s about all I want. Oh, and for the team not to be buried under a pile of rubble when the Big One hits.
This is a rematch from the last series between the two teams, through Brandon Webb won’t thank you for mentioning it. He pitched very well, allowing only one run over eight innings. However, this was the game where Brandon Lyon couldn’t retire anyone, blew a 4-1 lead as the Diamondbacks coughed up five runs in the ninth, in one of the most dis-spiriting losses of the season. However, in more evidence for ‘momentum’ being a myth, we’ve won seven of the ten games since, our best run in three months, so it clearly had no long-term effect.
At time of writing, it looks like we will be having to face Manny Ramirez before long, as the Dodgers have completed a trade with the Red Sox for the Disgruntled Slugger ™. See luckycc’s FanShot below for details, but it’s certainly going to help their offense. Whether the undeniable hit their defense will take - and his rep as a clubhouse cancer - will outweigh this, however, remains to be seen.
Here’s some cheering news. “Shortstop Khalil Greene fractured his left hand on Wednesday night when he slammed a storage chest at Petco Park in frustration over his season-long slump.” Normally, a player getting injured wouldn’t be cause for amusement. But when it’s the result of them acting like a petulant five-year old - see also the recent splinterific incident involving TroyBoy - then I think it’s fine to snigger loudly. Hey, that’s way to avoid having to play for the woeful Padres.
You’ll have to wait until morning for a report, since it’s Mrs. SnakePit’s birthday, and so she deserves - and will be getting! - my full attention tonight. There will be dinner; there may be a movie; then, who knows?
But it’s not going to involve any kind of recap, of that I’m pretty sure…

Dodgers get ManRam, D-Backs get disappointment
Closed Published by Greg Esposito July 31st, 2008 on AZ Sports Hub - Arizona's Destination for Sports - Blogs - Podcasts - ForumsI don’t know why I seem to be surprised by these kinds of days in Arizona sports.
That Diamondbacks had the chance to improve their team before the deadline and were hesitant to pull the trigger. The Dodgers on the other hand didn’t show any hesitation in picking up Manny Ramirez and his contract.
That’s right D-Backs’ […]
